Retroactive vs. incremental rebate tiers: what's the difference?

Nov 7, 2026 · 2 min read

Short answer

With a retroactive tier, reaching a new threshold raises the rebate rate on every dollar purchased in the period. With an incremental tier, the higher rate applies only to dollars above the threshold. Retroactive tiers create a big jump right at the threshold, which is what drives year-end overbuying.

Same tiers, two answers

Take one schedule: 2% at $1M, 3% at $1.5M. Here's what each type pays at a few purchase levels.

PurchasesRetroactiveIncremental
$1,000,000$20,000$0
$1,490,000$29,800$9,800
$1,500,000$45,000$10,000
$1,600,000$48,000$13,000

Look at the move from $1.49M to $1.5M. Under retroactive tiers, $10,000 more in purchases earns $15,200 more in rebate. Under incremental tiers, it earns $200.

How each one is calculated

Retroactive: find the highest tier you've reached and multiply that rate by total purchases. At $1.5M: 3% × $1,500,000 = $45,000.

Incremental: each rate applies only to its band. At $1.6M: 2% on the $500K between $1M and $1.5M ($10,000), plus 3% on the $100K above $1.5M ($3,000) = $13,000.

How to tell which one you have

Read the agreement wording.

  • "On all purchases," "from dollar one," or "retroactive to the first dollar" means retroactive.
  • "On purchases in excess of," "on incremental purchases," or "above the threshold" means incremental.

If the wording is unclear, ask the vendor rep and get the answer in writing. You'll need it if there's ever a dispute over what you're owed.

Why it matters

For tier pushes: retroactive tiers make it tempting to buy just enough to cross a threshold. Sometimes that pays. Often the carrying cost eats the rebate. Run it through the break-even formula first.

For accruals: when you cross a retroactive threshold, every dollar already accrued at the old rate needs a true-up. If nobody books it, you won't notice when the vendor pays at the old rate.

Common questions

Which is more common, retroactive or incremental?

Both show up in distribution. Many volume rebate programs are retroactive because it gives the vendor a strong lever to pull more volume. The only reliable answer for a given vendor is the agreement itself.

What does 'from dollar one' mean in a rebate agreement?

It means the tier is retroactive. Once you reach the threshold, the rate applies to all purchases in the period, starting from the first dollar.

Do retroactive tiers affect how I accrue?

Yes. When you cross a retroactive threshold, the higher rate applies to purchases you already accrued at the lower rate. You need a catch-up entry for the difference. Missing that true-up is a common source of rebate leakage.
